Body mass index (BMI) is a measure of body fat based on height and weight that applies to adult men and women.

Body Mass Index (BMI) can be used to indicate if you are overweight, obese, underweight or normal. It will, however, overestimate fatness in people who are muscular or athletic.

  • Underestimate body fat for older adults or other people with low muscle mass
  • Overestimate body fat for people who are very muscular and physically fit
  • Inadequately evaluate health risks of people with excess abdominal fat

Underweight = <18.5 
Normal weight = 18.5–24.9 
Overweight = 25–29.9
